The Story of Spud's Original Pizza - "Fresh, Healthy and Delicious™"Andrew W. Beretvas, the founder of Spud's Pizza, has been a well-known entrepreneur in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1976, having pioneered several new businesses, both in high-technology and also in food service. As a Business Development Consultant, Andrew has always had an eye for new opportunities. When examining the semi-casual fast-food market, it was clear to Andrew that though pizza is the most popular fast food in the U.S.A., current offerings from the various chains left much to be desired. Andrew found that few operators, if any, addressed the needs of the health-conscious, more aware consumer, with a lighter, healthier pizza. In researching the market in depth, Andrew also found that though potatoes are America's favorite vegetables, few pizzerias ever used potatoes in their fares.
Andrew set out to find a location appropriate enough for the launching of his great new pizzas and found the old South Berkeley Bank Building, a Landmark Building that was designed by one of America's most famous architects. With the lease secured in 2003, Spud's Pizza and Brew was born. The word "International" was added to Spud's name to emphasize that Spud's serves a diverse international clientele, while offering beer and wine from all over the world. It makes no difference from where you come, you will find something to please your palate at Spud's Pizza & Brew International.
Built in 1906, as the South Berkeley Bank, the building is located at the intersection of two of the main arteries into Berkeley, in the historic Lorin district, at Adeline Street and Alcatraz Avenues. Here, Spud's Pizza serves a growing community of office workers and residents and is also convenient to 50,000 vehicles per day. Spud’s Pizza – Fresh, Healthy & Delicious™ is a unique new product, in that it features whole wheat dough and potato toppings in America’s favorite food. Spud’s Pizza is made with all natural ingredients and is high in vitamins, fiber and antioxidants.
