Still Forced to Battle Berkeley's Bureaucracy3/17/05 Even though Spud's neighborhood appears to uniformly support Spud's efforts to get a beer and wine license, St. Patrick's Day was celebrated at Spud's without beer or wine. Though the Mayor's Office has pledged to assist Spud's at gaining its beer and wine license, the requisite zoning code changes are still mired in Berkeley's bureaucracy, preventing Spud's from applying for a waiver of the parking requirement that is a precondition of Spud's Use Permit. Representatives of Berkeley's Permit Center indicated that the zoning law changes that are required have been approved by the Zoning Adjustment Board, however, they still need to be reviewed and voted on by the City Council. The time frame quoted was sometimes in April or May, 2005, which would then allow Spud's to request a waiver from the odious parking requirements that have nearly wrecked the establishment of this long-awaited restaurant. |
